The Reverend Dr. Derek J. Cheek was born in Dunkirk, IN. He attended Cedarville College in Ohio and holds a Bachelor of Arts in theology/philosophy from there; he also earned a Master of Arts in literature from Wright State in Dayton, OH, and a Master of Divinity in church history from Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft. Wayne, IN. He completed a Doctor of Ministry degree at Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry in Ambridge, PA (near Pittsburgh), focusing on the changing role of the church in a postmodern era. Derek spent nearly six years as pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in Wellsville, MO, before coming to Immanuel, and was the minister for youth and families at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Kettering, OH, for five years prior to that. Derek also served as a mainframe applications analyst for the Department of Defense’s DISA branch in Dayton for three years before entering the ministry. Derek has been married to Lynette since 1986. She works as a behavior specialist for Beacon Light Services in Bradford, PA. Additionally, she is currently completing a post-masters ABA program at Penn State. Oldest daughter, Cara, is a junior at SUNY Geneseo; middle daughter, Lindsay, is a freshman majoring in music therapy; and youngest daughter, Jacqi, is a senior in high school.
